History

Ampulle’s History

If you want to tell Ampulle and the dry Gin and Beef Club’s story, there’s on person we have to mention! Erika Wilhelmer, founder and mother of current owner Michael Wilhelmer, opened a wine tavern in the west of Stuttgart 60 years ago. Erika wasn’t just a passionate restaurateur! She always loved to poke around at flea markets and at antiques shops and look for fancy things! She even got an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records with her pig museum.

At one of these shops, she noticed a neon sign saying: “Camelia gives all women security and self-confidence!” In her mind’s eye, she pictured customers sitting at the bar in a good mood, drinking beer and wine and above them, there was this advert for a woman’s hygiene product!

She didn’t just by the “Camelia lamp” at this dealership, she also bought 110 year old chemist’s equipment with it! And she used it to build a working restaurant with a bar! The many old and original pharmacy accessories give Ampulle its very special touch!

In 2015, we invigorated the old chemist’s with gin, botanicals and a new spirit... We’ve brought gin & tonic back to the place it was invented 250 years ago! The journey from London Dry Gin to Dry Aged Beef wasn’t far. We bring the biggest selection of gins and the best beef cuts in what is probably Stuttgart’s smallest steak restaurant!
